Discipleship or Apostasy

My name is Gene Aptaker. I am a 55-year-old American man currently living in Viet Nam, but seriously considering a return to Knoxville, TN.

Having gotten that out of the way, I want to state clearly and distinctly the purpose of my putting up this web log:

The purpose is to call attention, as loudly and clearly as possible, to the one desperate, crying issue within the Body of Christ, the Church, throughout the world.

What is that one desperate, crying issue? It is this: The Body of Christ as a whole, including its individual members, is not functioning according to its biblical calling and mandate.

There are many issues facing the Church, and they may all have an important place, but if the Body is not walking according to its God-given calling and purpose, then these other issues don’t particularly matter.

Yes, there are a lot of false and perverse teachings and practices, as well as needs within the Body, and it is important to see these matters for what they are, but, if the Church at large is missing its purpose and calling, then what does it accomplish to point these things out and be aware of them? It will only lead to pride and self-righteousness.

What is the calling and mandate of the Body of Christ? It can be stated, basically, in two parts:

1. The Body is called to be the heralds, the forerunners, of the resurrected, ascended King of kings and Lord of Lords, and I will state clearly that I am not talking about Dominionism, a heresy which is growing by leaps and bounds within the Church today.

As the heralds of the King and coming eternal Kingdom, they are to demonstrate, not just talk about, the reality that Jesus is now enthroned in the heavens, far above all principality, power, dominion, and every name that is named; and by demonstrate, I mean to prove by deed that Jesus, the head of the Body, now has all power and authority.

Yes, there are words involved in being His heralds, but it goes way beyond just words; beyond being one voice among many in the spiritual marketplace.

The Church is also to call men; in fact command them (Acts 17:30), to come in now, voluntarily, to this eternal Kingdom, and to come under the King’s rule.

2. The body is called to show and demonstrate that a new race of man has been created, with a resurrected, ascended and glorified King as its head. This new race is to show forth and manifest the life, nature and ways of its head, King Jesus; and be radically different, in all observable ways, than the old, corrupt race that has Adam as its head. This new race shows it is fit for the coming Kingdom of righteousness.

If you read your Bible, and think about it, these two things are clearly what the apostolic Church was all about. They were demonstrating that there was a resurrected King enthroned above, and they were calling people to join them in the Kingdom, under the Lordship of the King.  This is also what true disciples have done down through the Church age.

I will state again, also, that I am not talking about the Church taking this world for Christ, as Dominionism puts forth, but calling people out of every people-group as the world gets progressively more corrupt.  The believers will not usher in or establish the Kingdom; they will only be subjects of the King, demonstrate His nature, ways and authority, and call others into that same relationship.

Is what I described the reality of what we see in the Church today?

With all its “nice”, pleasant programs and projects, or even the supposedly “mighty” ones we see in the Charismatic/Pentecostal realm, we must answer, “No; this is not what we see in the Churches today, nor in the lives of individual believers.”

If you have found your way to this site, and you have genuine care for the Lord; His agenda; His honor and glory… then read on. There are a lot of words, concepts and issues presented here, and frankly, only sincere, committed followers of Jesus are gonna want to spend their limited time or energy fooling with this.

It boils down to this: We have some massive, ugly problems within the Church, the body of Christ. There are also solutions, but they are costly and will be painful. Are you willing to seriously consider these matters, and invest yourself in being a part of the solution?

Before I go into detail concerning the problems and solutions, I feel a little personal testimony is in order.

I’m fairly certain that many people who have known me over the years have seriously wondered if I have lost my sanity. I have wondered this myself at times.

Why in the world am I doing all this? Why am I spending great amounts of my time, energy and any other meager resources I may have on writing, blogging, debating, convincing, praying, running around the world, losing “friends” and family, and striving (rather unsuccessfully) to experience what I call “the real thing” with other Christians?

There are three reasons. Maybe more; but I can think of three.

First, the Lord has been showing me these issues regarding the condition of the Church for over twenty years now. Early on, I tried avoiding them and sweeping them under the rug, but He wouldn’t let me. Then I began tentatively “sharing” my ideas and perspectives with other believers. This didn’t go over too well. Then I started sharing more persistently.

I discovered some interesting (to me, anyway) things. The majority of Church-goers, and other believers, really don’t wanna hear this stuff; but there are a surprising number who can and will hear, and they know exactly what I’m talkin’ about. Problem is, the majority of them don’t wanna do anything about it.

It’s fine to have interesting, stimulating discussions about these issues, but basically, people have their lives and agendas to work through, and they’re not too thrilled about “rockin the boat”, goin’ against the grain, being looked at funny, etc.  I’ve even had a Pastor and an elder of a Church I was part of “agree” with everything I had to say, but, I didn’t find any willingness on their part to pro actively work together to bring any changes.

So, I believe now that it’s a numbers game. Sounds kinda weird, but I think the Lord may be showing me this. Or else, maybe I am crazy.

Gotta get the word out far and wide, challenge as many people as possible, get under their skin like a tick, keep pressing, be a real pain.  What’s the alternative? Give up? Quit? Frankly, I’ve wanted to, but I can’t. Stupid, maybe.

The second reason I’m doing all this perhaps explains why I’m not willing to give up.

In the mid-nineties, I was involved in some missionary work in the Republic of Georgia (former Soviet Union) for two years. During that time, I got some real “tastes” of… guess what? You’re right! The real thing; divine appointments, healings, transformed lives, almost-daily adventures with God.  I was forever “ruined” as far as “doin’ Church” ever again was concerned.

There was more life, power, excitement and wonder in those two years than in all my previous Church-life combined, and the main reason was that I was being part of the body with other parts of the body, not “going to Church”.

I believe also that we were only scratching the surface.

The third reason is that I want the Lord to be praised, honored and glorified, and I don’t want to stand before Him and hear, “With all I opened up to you; with all I enabled you to see of reality; why did you do so little with that?”

Consider this: Jesus and the apostles had serious, major problems with the existing religious establishment. True disciples since the time of the apostles have had similar major problems. Do we really believe it will be different in the times in which we live?

Established religion, including the true franchise (Israel, “Church”), has always been the greatest enemy of God’s highest and best purposes.  In fact, the Church fell from its highest and best when Constantine, a Roman Emperor, “converted” and married the Church to the State and the world.  It was then that the Church became the religion we see today, with some notable exceptions.

If you’re still interested, please read the second part of this writing, where I’ll go into the actual problems and solutions.

  1. i want to know more of discipleship

  2. Hey Gene,

    Just wanted to say…

Good job my brother in Christ!!

I’ve known you had a great ability to express yourself through the written word for years, along with a profound ability to open up the scriptures in an effective way. But now it looks like you’re getting the whole blog thing down too.

Hope I was of some help to you dude, but without any hesitancy whatsoever I pray divine blessing and favour upon what you’re doing. You have a valid message that needs to be heard.

    God bless you my friend,

    John.

p.s. Just a side note. If you look at my username on this comment you will notice it is a hyperlink. That’s what I was referring to yesterday.

  3. John,

Thanks so much for your encouragement AND your tremendous help.

I am very blessed to have a brother and friend like you, although we’ve never met.

If we ever do meet, I gotta take you out for some fish n chips, or a spot of tea and crumpets, or somethin’ along those lines.

    Blessings, bro.

  4. John, who commented:

i want to know more of discipleship

I emailed you. I’ll help you in any way I can.

  5. Hey Gene what ever happenend to those wonderful days chasing golf balls at Marine Park or sneaking into the Jets games or playing one on one until people shouted out their windows, why don’t you kids go home already. its midnight. Hope you are well.

  6. To clarify any confusion about the above comment by Howard:

We were boyhood-young adult friends in Brooklyn, NY.

We snuck into N.Y. Jets and N.Y. Mets games, played one-on-one FULL COURT basketball late at night, and lots of other silly stuff which would perhaps better be left unsaid.

I guess Howard STILL thinks these were the best times of his life.

  7. I want to try and offer some suggestions that may help bring people to your site:

1.Make sure to use really good, relevant tags for each post. Since you are talking about Christian life/ideas I would add “Religion” for each post you do. You can add several tags to your post but I think wordpress frowns upon people who use more tags than they had words in the actual posts. I try and keep each posts to about 6 tags and up to 6 “posted in” categories. This I believe makes me look a little bit less desperate… I hope ;) Also try and keep the “tags” different from the “posted in” this way your post will actually be set in different categories. So if you use 6 “tags” and 6 “posted in” then your post will actually appear in 12 different places.

2.If you go to my site you will notice that I have joined a few places that help get the word out about my blog. In the second column when you scroll toward the bottom you will see little buttons that you can click. If I was going to pick two it would be: “TopBlogArea (red button) & BlogTopList (baby blue button).

3.Another way to get people to your site is to write on controversial topics. Instead of just making statements in your post make sure to ask questions.

4.I think it helps to get at least 4 post up a week. This has something to do with the search engines and your site. I don’t know more about this but google may help.

5.Join feedburner.com and submit your site. Try and get readers via feed.

6.Lastly I am trying to get a blogroll going. Not the one you joined on my site. That one is really just to promote my site and of course your site. If you look at my site in the second colum you will notice at the top a blue button that says Christian Ekklesia Blogroll. Click on this and it will bring you to the homepage for this blogroll. Also one can see the javascript and nonjavascript version of the blogroll buttons. The big more square looking button is for wordpress (nonjava) and the one below it, scrolling marquee, is for blogs like blogger (javascript). If you would like to join this blogroll then really only two things are needed. Leave a comment on the Christian Ekklesia Blogroll homepage and let me know. I will then add you to the blogroll and the only thing I require is that you add the blue square button to your site so that we can continue to get the word out. I hope I was of some assistance.

  8. i love you and your message and also wants you to read the following message and respond.

GOD & MAMMON ARE MUTUALLY EXCLUSIVE

This message will without dispute provoke and offend many, many will even deride me for the sake of this message. The same thing happened to Jesus in the book of Luke Chapter 16:13-16; Matthew 6:24.

To deal justly with this topic therefore boldness must be employed as Christ did. I must confess that only one or two courses is open to me in this case. Firstly, to detach myself, for the time being, from the church, and look at it as a complete outsider. This is decidedly not an easy thing to do, for anyone who was born into and nurtured in Christianity. Secondly, to look at the church as a son would look at the household of his birth and upbringing. He is part and parcel of that household over which his parents preside as guides, philosophers, and friends. In looking critically at the household therefore, he is expected to do two things at once and the same time: to do a kind of unsparing self-examination as well as a candid reappraisal of the manner in which the affairs of the household are run and administered by the parents, using as his yardstick a generally accepted code of ethnics as applicable to households. In the context of this message, the church is the household; the layman is the son; and the clergy are the parents.

According to tradition, the Christian Church had it’s origin on the first feast of Pentecost after the Ascension. Jesus had given a firm command and an assurance to the eleven surviving Apostles in the following wards:

“……But wait for the promise of the Father, which saith he, ye have heard of me. For John Truly baptized with water: but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days hence”. (Acts 1:4-5) KJV.

However, as Jesus spoke, the Apostles were entertaining less lofty ideas. To them, the fulfillment of the promise to which Jesus referred was to be construed in partisan and nationalistic terms, and as imparting immediate worldly gain. Accordingly, they inquired:
“……Lord, wilt thou at this time restore again the kingdom to Israel? … (Act 1:6) KJV.

In answer to their question, and as was His habit on similar occasions in the past, Jesus said: “…….it is not for you to know the times or the seasons, which the father hath put in his own power. But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the Earth.” (Acts 1:7-8) KJV.

Here Jesus clearly refused to bargain on terms which would confer any pre-determined earthly reward on the Apostles individually or as Jews. As far as he was concerned, they were to wait in Jerusalem for the descent of the Holy Spirit upon them. When this has happened, they will receive power, and they will bear witness for him in their neighbourhoods, and in all parts of the world. In this way, Jesus lays it down, once and for all time, what the purpose of the church and of the act of worship shall be. The Church shall not be a place, where worshippers will seek to give their act of worship and devotion to God in exchange for some worldly goods and benefits. Instead, the church shall be a sanctuary where those who worship God in spirit and in truth will receive power. The Power of the Holy Spirit – which will strengthen them to bear witness for Christ and for God in whatever spheres of earthly endeavours they may be engaged.

As we all know, the Pentecost, apart from being a Jewish harvest festival celebrated on the 50th day after the Passover, is also believed in later years, to commemorate the given of the law at Mount Sinai. This conjuncture between the celebration of two memorable events, and the bestowal of the Holy Spirit on the Apostles is of extreme importance to all Christians. Jesus had deliberately chosen the anniversary of the given of the Ten Commandments for the founding of his Church in order to impress upon us, if only we would strive to understand, the unique purpose and attributes of the Church.

Exodus chapter 20 tells the graphic story of the given of, as well as sets out, the Decalogue. But, in addition to the commandments, verses 22-23 are significant for this topic. They read as follows: “……And the Lord said unto Moses, Thus thou shalt say unto the children of Israel, ye have seen that I have talked with you from heaven. Ye shall not make with me gods of silver, neither shall ye make unto you gods of gold.”

In Matthew 22:34-40 Jesus sums up Exodus 20 in the following pithy and penetrating words:
“……But when the Pharisees had heard that he had put the Sadducees to silence, they were gathered together.
Then one of them, which was a Lawyer, asked him a question, tempting him, and saying,
Master, which is the great commandment in the law?
Jesus said unto him, THOU SHALT LOVE THE LORD THY GOD WITH ALL THY HEART, AND WITH ALL THY SOUL, AND WITH ALL THY MIND.
This is the first and great commandment.
And the second is like unto it, THOU SHALT LOVE THY NEIGHBOUR AS THYSELF. ON THESE TWO COMMANDMENTS HANG ALL THE LAW AND THE PROPHETS.” Matthew 22:34-40 KJV.
“No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and Mammon”. And the Pharisees also, who were covetous, heard all these things: and they derided him. And he said unto them, Ye are they which justify yourselves before men; but God knoweth your hearts: for that which is highly esteemed among men is abomination in the sight of God. The law and the prophets were until John: since that time the Kingdom of God is preached, and every man presseth into it. And it is easier for heaven and earth to pass, than one title of the law to fail. – Luke 16:13-17 and Matthew 6:24 KJV.

This summing up emphasises the categorical imperativeness, and the absolute character of the law. Here again Jesus leaves no room for bargaining, or half – heartedness. We must love the Lord our God with ALL our heart, with ALL our soul, with ALL our mind; and we must love our neighbours as ourselves. He leaves us in no doubt that God and Mammon (money) are mutually exclusive. In His Church, there can be no room for God and Mammon, nor is it possible to secure Mammonish rewards through the love of God and the Grace of our Lord Jesus Christ.

In His encounter with the Samaritan woman, Jesus made one of His greatest declarations in the following words: “… Ye worship ye know not what: we know what we worship: for salvation is of the Jews. But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him. God is a spirit: and they that worship him, must worship him in spirit and in truth”. (John 4: 22-24).
Also, Jesus told the multitude that followed him, “If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple. And whosoever doth not bear his cross, and come after me, cannot be my disciple. For which of you, intending to build a tower, sitteth not down first, and counteth the cost, whether he have sufficient to finish it?. Lest haply, after he hath laid the foundation, and is not able to finish it, all that behold it begin to mock him, saying, this man began to build, and was not able to finish. Or what king, going to make war against another king, sitteth not down first, and consulteth whether he be able with ten thousand to meet him that cometh against him with twenty thousand? Or else, while the other is yet a great way off, he sendeth an ambassage, and desireth conditions of peace. So likewise, whosoever he be of you that forsaketh not all that he hath, he cannot be my disciple. Salt is good: but if the salt has lost his savour, wherewith shall it be seasoned? It is neither fit for the land, nor yet for the dunghill; but men cast it out. He that hath ears to hear, let him hear. (Luke 14:26-35).

Again Jesus is here insisting that God is not the material object of the heathen, nor is he the anthropomorphized creature of the early Old Testament times. He is a spirit: a non-physical, non-material-Being:: and those who worship him must do so in conditions, where, in the hour of worship, their indwelling spirit takes complete charge of their being; where the flesh and the objective and the subjective activities of the mind are subdued; and where the desire for selfish material gains or benefits are completely smothered.

The sum and substance of what I have said is that the Christians are enjoined to worship God for His own sake alone. The Church is not the place for horse-trading or bargaining. Nor is it the place where you can give your worship to God in return for money or for the things that are mammon’s or anything that smacks of self-seeking and naked self-interest.

But you are to “set your mind on God’s kingdom and His righteousness before everything else and all the rest will come to you as well” (Matthew 6:33).

Surely, it will be contended, there must be certain objectives in this world which each and everyone of us wants to achieve. For instance, we want to pass our examinations; we want jobs and promotions; we want to build our own houses; we want to become clergy, commissioners, successful businessmen, we want to have money in reasonable quantity to enable us discharge such of our social and religious obligations as demand the use of money; we have a Lawsuit and we want to win it against the opposing party; the young ones amongst us want to win the hands of the boys or girls of their desire; and so on, and so forth. We want all these and many more. They are all legitimate ends; and what is wrong in bringing these wants and cares of ours to God in His Church, in the hour of devotion, worship and prayer?

Jesus has a perfect answer for this kind of argument and query. He enjoins us not to worry about all these things: for after all these things do the Gentiles seek, for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all this things. (Matthew 6:32) KJV. In addition, he took pains to give us clear and unmistakable guidance on how to pray. Says He: But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly. But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking. Be not ye therefore like unto them: for your Father knoweth what things ye have need of, before ye ask him. (Matthew 6:7-8) KJV.

In my observation, having regard to the speed and light-heartedness with which this prayer is repeated, I have serious doubts as to whether the real significance of the Lord’s Prayer is fully appreciated by both clergy and laity. It is, I think, therefore, appropriate to make a brief exposition of it here.

It is certainly no longer realized that the Lord’s Prayer is a model of how to pray. Jesus prefaces it with the following injunctions.: This is how you should pray”.

But what the Church has done now is to regard this model as an appendage to our own “babbling like the heathen”, which babbling sometimes goes on for the part of one hour, and invariably covers all manner and character of personal grievances, complaints, fears, worries and desires. The very thing Jesus warns us against.

The Lord’s prayer itself begins with a solemn declaration of absolute reverence for our Father in Heaven. This is followed by an invocation for the advent of His Kingdom which Jesus enjoins us to seek before other things “can come to us as well”. This invocation is followed by an undertaking on our part to do God’s will on earth as it is done in Heaven, Heaven being a spiritual condition or state in which there are no earthly cares, worries, and wants. In other words, we undertake, in all our daily pursuits, to do the will of the Father always. It is after all these – after the declaration of our absolute reverence for God’s Fatherhood, after the invocation for the advent of His kingdom, and after the solemn undertaking to do His will on earth as in heaven; – it is after all these that we are entitled to ask for anything to be done for us for our personal benefits. It is then that we are permitted to ask for our daily bread – that is, all our needs – which will be given to us for the asking.

As for forgiveness for the wrong we have done, we can get it only on one condition namely: that we forgive others the wrongs they have done us. Forgiveness for us is not possible otherwise. It is now customary for some worshippers to try a trick by saying. Forgive us our trespasses, that we may forgive those who trespass against us. But God cannot be deceived, and His injunctions as transmitted to us by our Lord Jesus Christ are inviolable. The rest of the Prayer is well-know, and it speaks for itself.

I would, however, like to emphasis that all who profess Christianity should not just thoughtlessly rap out the Lord’s Prayer either on Sundays or another occasions of worship. We should now and again recite the prayer slowly and ponder over every line of it.

All along, in all his teaching, and in His Prayer, Jesus enjoins us to keep two things distinctly apart. Firstly, we must worship God for His Own Sake and without any pre-condition or ulterior motive. When we do this, either in the Church, in our homes, or elsewhere, and seek communion with Him, we will receive power which will enable us to cope with any problem or any situation that may arise in any place and at any time. Secondly, when we go about our daily earthly pursuits, we should do so without fear, without worry, and with absolute confidence that the immanent power of God is with us to guide us to think, say and do the right and to help us triumph over any obstacle that may come in our way. Paul said: “The Just shall live by Faith.” And he defines faith in (Hebrew 11:1); as
“Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, and the evidence of things not seen”.
“He proceeded in the same chapter to recount many acts of faith in the scriptures: For by it the elders obtained a good report. Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear. By faith Abel offered unto God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain, by which he obtained witness that he was righteous, God testifying of his gifts: and by it he being dead yet speaketh. By faith E’-noch was translated that he should not see death; and was not found, because God had translated him: for before his translation he had this testimony, that he pleased God. But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him. By faith Noah, being warned of God of things not seen as yet, moved with fear, prepared an ark to the saving of his house; by the which he condemned the world, and became heir of the righteousness which is by faith. By faith Abraham, when he was called to go out into a place which he should after receive for an inheritance, obeyed; and he went out, not knowing whither he went. By faith he sojourned in the land of promise, as in a strange country, dwelling in tabernacles with Isaac and Jacob, the heirs with him of the same promise: For he looked for a city which hath foundations, which builder and maker is God. Through faith also Sarah herself received strength to conceive seed, and was delivered of a child when she was past age, because she judged him faithful who had promised. Therefore sprang there even of one, and him as good as dead, so many as the stars of the sky in multitude, and as the sand which is by the sea shore innumerable. These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off, and were persuaded of them, and embraced them, and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth. For they that say such things declare plainly that they seek a country. And truly, if they had been mindful of that country from whence they came out, they might have had opportunity to have returned. But now they desire a better country, that is, an heavenly: wherefore God is not ashamed to be called their God: for he hath prepared for them a city. By faith Abraham, when he was tried, offered up Isaac: and he that had received the promises offered up his only begotten son, Of whom it was said, That in Isaac shall thy seed be called: Accounting that God was able to raise him up, even from the dead; from whence also he received him in a figure. By faith Isaac blessed Jacob and Esau concerning things to come. By faith Jacob, when he was a dying, blessed both the sons of Joseph; and worshipped, learning upon the top of his staff. By faith Joseph, when he died, made mention of the departing of the children of Israel; and gave commandment concerning his bones. By faith Moses, when he was come to years, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh’s daughter; Choosing rather to suffer affliction with the people of God, than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a season; Esteeming the reproach of Christ greater riches than the treasures in Egypt: for he had respect unto the recompence of the reward. By faith he forsook Egypt, not fearing the wrath of the king: for he endured, as seeing him who is invisible. Through faith he kept the Passover, and the sprinkling of blood, lest he that destroyed the firstborn should touch them. By faith they passed through the Red sea as by dry land: which the Egyptians assaying to do were drowned. By faith the walls of Jericho fell down, after they were compassed about seven days. By faith the harlot Rahab perished not with them that believed not, when she had received the spies with peace. And what shall I more say? For the time would fail me to tell of Gedeon, and of Barak, and of Samson, and of Jephthae; of David also, and Samuel, and of the prophets: Who through faith subdued kingdoms, wrought righteousness, obtained promises, stopped the mouths of lions, Quenched the violence of fire, escaped the edge of the sword, out of weakness were made strong, waxed valiant in fight, turned to flight the armies of the aliens. (Hebrew 11:2-34.) Space and time did not permit him to relate the story of SHADRACK, MESHACK, and ABEDNEGO. But we know that by faith SHADRACK, MESHACK, and ABEDNEGO refused to fall down and worship NEBUCHADNEZZAR’S huge and attractive golden image. In consequence, they were thrown into a “burning fiery furnace”. But, contrary to all natural expectation, they were saved, and God was there and then glorified.

And what of ourselves”? Paul asked. With all these witnesses to faith around us like a cloud; he answers, ‘we must throw off every encumbrance, every sin to which we cling, and run with resolution the race for which we are called: For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out. And having food and raiment let us be there with content. But they that will be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and hurtful lusts, which drown men in destruction and perdition. For the love of money is the root of all evil. Which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pieced themselves through with many sorrows. But thou, O man of God, flee these things; and follow after righteousness, Godliness, Faith, Love, Patience, Meekness, Fight the good fight of Faith, lay hold on eternal life, whereunto thou art also called, and hast professed a good profession before many witnesses. (1 Timothy 6:7-12) KJV.

Our eyes fixed on Jesus, on whom faith depends from start to finish: Jesus, who, for the sake of the Joy that lay ahead of him, endured the cross, making light of its disgrace and has taken his seat at the right hand of the throne of God.” Think of him who submitted to such opposition from sinners: that will help you to lose heart and grow faint. In your struggle against sin, you have not yet resisted to the point of shedding your blood. You have forgotten the text of the scripture which addresses you as sons and appeals to you in these words:- “My son, do not think lightly of the Lord’s discipline, Nor lose heart when he corrects you; for the Lord discipline those whom he loves. He lays the rod on every son whom he acknowledges”.

In the Lord’s Prayer we undertake to do the will of the Father, before we dare to ask him to give us our daily bread – that is, all our earthly needs which he knows. The question is: How do we do God’s will on earth as in heaven? Him, we have never seen. If this, how do we love Him with all our heart, with all our soul and with all our mind”.

The answer to these questions is given in Matthew 25:31-46. if we feed the hungry, give water to the thirsty, house the homeless, clothe the naked, heal and care for the sick, give succour to the destitute, elevate the down-trodden, love our neighbours as we love ourselves, and treat others always as we would like them to treat us: – If we do all these, we will be fulfilling the law and the prophets which enjoins that we should love the Lord our God with all our heart, with all our soul and with all our mind; and we would all be doing the will of our Father on earth as in heaven. The Apostles demonstrated it when they collected to support the poor and down trodden. And all that believed were together, and had all things in common; and sold their possessions and goods, and parted them to all men, as every man had need. And they, continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, did eat their meat with gladness and singleness of heart. Acts 2:44-46. Neither was there any among them that lacked: for as many as were possessors of lands or houses sold them, and brought the prices of the things that were sold, And laid them down at the apostles’ feet: and distribution was made unto every man according as he had need. Acts 4:34-35. And in those days, when the number of the disciples was multiplied, there arose a murmuring of the Grecians against the Hebrews, because their widows were neglected in the daily ministration. Then the twelve called the multitude of the disciples unto them, and said, It is not reason that we should leave the word of God, and serve tables. Wherefore, brethren, look ye out among you seven men of honest report, full of the Holy Ghost and wisdom, whom we may appoint over this business. But we will give ourselves continually to prayer, and to the ministry of the word. Acts 6: 1-4

It would be idle to suggest that each and everyone of us can do all these things every day of his life. There are bound to be failures and lapses. What is important, however, is that we must continually strive to do them. And in our striving, we must not allow our occasional failures to deter or discourage us. In this connection, we must always remember the wise saying that “A saint is a sinner who continually strives to do good”. It is constant striving after good doing, whatever the odds that sets a saint apart from a sinner, and it is this that constitutes the earnest seeking of God’s kingdom and his righteousness, after which every other things will be added unto us.

With all that I have said, I can now look at the church and say as follow:-
In the words of our General Confession, we of the Church – that is, clergy, laymen, and all –
“Have left undone those things which we ought to have done, and have done those things which we ought not to have done, and there is no health in us.” We have turned the Church into a modern counterpart of the temple which Jesus saw in Jerusalem and which he likened to a ‘robbers cave”. Our Church today, presents a forum to which all manner and kind of malefactors repair to worship God on their own self-seeking, selfish terms. The more money we contribute to further what we call God’s work – that is, the erection of Church buildings, purchase of Chorister’s robes, purchase of Church bus, purchase of Pastors cars, etc – the greater, we believe, is our blessing from above. And the clergy do not hesitate to encourage the Church members (the Laity) in this false belief. The widow’s mite has lost all recognition. It is only the rich and the socially important that are given prominence on all occasions. Money or mammon now sits on a high throne in the Church. The rich, like the hypocrites of old whom Jesus roundly condemned, not only “go about with broad phylacteries and wear deep and colourful fringes on their robes and agbadas, have places of honour at feasts and Chief seats in the Churches, also they are given “Christianised” Pagan titles which give them prime of place in the Church and are allowed to have special prominent seats built for them, and reserved for their exclusive use alone in the House of God.
“Jesus said to the multitude, and to his disciples, the scribes and the Pharisees sit in Moses’ seat: All therefore whatsoever they bid you observe, that observe and do; but do not ye after their works: for they say and do not. For they bind heavy burdens and grievous to be borne, and lay them on men’s shoulder’s: but they themselves will not move them with one of their fingers. But all their works they do for to be seen of men: they make broad their phylacteries, and enlarge the borders of their garments, and love the uppermost rooms at feast, and the chief seats in the synagogues. And greetings in the markets, and to be called of men, Rabbi, Rabbi. But be not ye called Rabbi: For one is your master, even Christ; and all ye are brethren. And call no man your father upon the earth: For one is your Father, which is in Heaven. Neither be ye called masters: For one is your master, even Christ. (Matthew 23:1-10) KJV.

In the result, everyone now strives by hook or by crook, to be rich and socially important in order to win recognition and prominence in the church, and if possible, to acquire one of the ‘Christianised’ Pagan Church titles. They see to it too that they bring as much of their ill-gotten gains as they can spare to the Church, by way of atonement for their sins; and to secure approval for further loot. And they are invariably acclaimed for their generosity.

Members of the clergy vie with one another, sometimes with unparalleled ruthlessness, for promotion, or for posting to stations of their predilection, and in cases of founders of Churches, there is presently no satisfactory adjective or descriptive device. They thereby place personal achievement, aggrandisement, and comfort above the will of God in such matters and above devoted and selfless service to Him. As for the church members (Laity), they not only take sides in the fierce contests, whenever they ensue, but also sometimes, go to the extent of joining the contestants in the writing of poisonous anonymous letters designed to discredit their opponents and bring about their fall.

In all our selfish contests, strife’s and acrimonies, we have the temerity and audacity to invoke God’s help on the side which we espouse. In all matters, we regard ourselves as the true and impartial judges of the issues involved. And we only go to God as we do to one of our infamous members to ask for His support. What miserable sinners and idolaters we are!

We are miserable sinners for a multitude of reasons, and in particular because we dare to dictate to God what He should do in our affairs. We are idolaters because the God we purport to worship is not the true God but the God which we create in our own image. The heathen fashion for themselves a golden or wooden image and called it god. The Israelites anthropomorphise God and regard Him as belonging to their race alone. And we in our grand folly, have created for ourselves a god whose special private assignment is to help us to plunder without detection: to approve: all our deliberate misdoings and forgive them: and in short, to do our bidding at all times to our gratification and satisfaction. This is the God we now worship.

    Paul said:

‘Make no mistake about this! God cannot be fooled; a man reaps what he sows. If he sows seed in the field of his lower nature (sin), he will reap from it a harvest of corruption but if he sows in the field of the spirit of God, the spirit will bring him a harvest of eternal life”. Gal. 6: 7-8

Having gone thus far astray, what do we do now to be saved? What does the Church now do, in order to conform to Christ’s Original purpose for it. I have three suggestions to make.

Firstly, we must all seek to know the truth. Our Lord Jesus Christ has declared authoritatively in John 8:31-32 as follows:-
“Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, if ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed. And ye shall know the truth and the truth shall make you free.”

But as Pilate correctly ask in John 18:38, “What is truth?. From the logical point of view, truth is defined as “the harmonious relationship between a proposition and the state of affairs to which it refers.” That is the kind of truth which scientists, Lawyers and Judges in court of law, historians and such of their breed seek to establish. This is not the truth about which Jesus speaks. The truth about which Jesus speaks is clear from John 18:37-38. It says. “Pilate therefore said unto him, Art thou a king then? Jesus answered, Thou sayest that I am a king. To this end was I born and for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth. Every one that is of the truth heareth my voice. Pilate, saith unto him, what is truth?

Jesus did not say that He spoke the truth. He said he has come into the world to bear witness to the truth, and those who are not deaf to the truth listen to his voice. We all know that He has come into the world to bear witness to God, and that those who are willing to learn of God listen to him. Here is the heart of the matter. The truth of which Jesus speaks is God. But God, as we have learnt, is a spirit also. And as Paul assures us in 1 Cor. 6:19, our body is the Temple of the Holy Spirit which is God’s gift to us. Therefore, the truth which we seek to know is within everyone of us. But to know it, it is imperative for us to dethrone the tyranny of the flesh so that we may be in regular attunement with God through the Holy Spirit. Once we achieve this conquest and attain this attunement, we shall be free and greater than conquerors. All that remains for me to add, in this connection, is that all the teachings of Jesus are also true. This leads me to my second suggestion.

In all our thoughts, words, and deeds, we must heed the teachings of Jesus Christ. They are concrete enough for us to follow. All we have to do is to love our neighbours as ourselves, treat others as we would like them to treat us, care for the so-called common people and see to it always that whatever we desire for ourselves is capable of benefiting others as well. If these tests are not met, our worship of God is, in vain. If they are, blessed are we.

Thirdly, we should be prepared to go into the world to bear witness to God and to Christ. In other words, the Church should constantly make its voice heard in defence of all that is noble, of good report and true; and it should do so fearlessly, and regardless of consequences. For Jesus has commanded and assure us.

“Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. Amen. – Matthew 28:19-20.

“And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.
He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned.
    And these signs shall follow them that believe, in my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues;
They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover. – Mark 16:15-18.

Had the doctrine of Jesus Christ been preached always as pure as they came from his lips, the whole civilized world would now have been Christians.

  9. Pastor Iloube,

Thank you so much for sharing the article. I am seriously considering posting it on the site and calling attention to it. You have some very good and important insights to share.

I’d like to make a few brief comments touching some things you say in the article, although I think you probably know these things.

    1. It might be beneficial if you would get rid of the clergy-laity distinction in your thinking. I say that to be helpful; not critical.

Yes, there are people who are to shepherd, lead, teach, etc., but those are FUNCTIONS, part of the life and nature of Christ operating in the midst of His people, and ANYONE can be a tool in His hand.

    2. We must keep in mind that doing good for others MUST be more the result of Christ BEING OUR LIFE than a result of our efforts.

Yes, we are called to do and maintain good works, but we must not lose sight of the BASIS of them; Christ in us.

In connection with that thought, we also need to remember that one of the major reasons for the rapid growth of cults, like Jehovah’s Witnesses, is their dedication to doing “good works”, and they can do them better than Christians to a large degree, because they are convinced they’re important; we’re not.

    3. Finally, you said:

We should be prepared to go into the world to bear witness to God and to Christ. In other words, the Church should constantly make its voice heard in defence of all that is noble, of good report and true; and it should do so fearlessly, and regardless of consequences.

I fully agree. We just need to make sure we’re doing that as an expression of Christ, and not as part of the vast variety of “things” that we “do for God”.

Bearing witness should simply be a demonstration of who and what we ARE. If that is the case, there will be great power in it, and the Lord will be glorified.

Blessings to you. I hope we will build and maintain a relationship that will be a glory to our Lord.

  10. Hello; Gene

There is an old story about an old priest whose function within the church was transcribing old Bibles from all over the world onto new ones. One day he asked his superior if he could go directly to the oldest original archives that were buried deep, heavily guarded, and cherished below the Vatican. So sacred were they that they were untouched for 1900 years.
Because of his many many years of loyalty, and age (he was 97)..he was granted his wish. After spending only an hour, underground, with these “original” treasures he emerged…crying hysterically. When questioned about his state, he replied….
    The Word is CELEBRATE…Not Celibate.

O.K. Gene here is my point..People hold on to things so tightly because they are afraid that if they let go (even for a millisecond) their facade world will explode. When Jesus said that heaven is within..he meant it literally. For the most part (not all) there is no true Christianity. There is only lip service.
Folks go to church one day a week to worship a poor carpenter. They spend the other 6 days ignoring the poor, …or just not showing love for their fellow brothers and sisters.
Gene!..preaching isn’t going to get the job done..it hasn’t so far..something will…find that something. It is truly within you
    You Are Loved

  11. “I guess Howard STILL thinks these were the best times of his life”….Gene, only Howard truly knows what he thinks.
Jesus loves Howard and that’s all that matters….Think about it.

    Ab

  12. Ab,

Just to set the record straight; Howard and I BOTH thought those were great times, and my comment was not meant in a bad or negative way at all.

  13. the real truth will never be out of reach if there are a few more godly and bold teachers like you. keep it up GENE and dont be disrupted by anything. i’m joe from GHANA(AFRICA)

  18. i would like to have some of your videoclips and study some of your booklets for my church

  19. I empathize with you regarding what you have written. However, the main problem,IMHO is “Apathy”

    Apathy 30-Oct-08

    G543
    ἀπείθεια
    apeitheia
    ap-i’-thi-ah
From G545; disbelief (obstinate and rebellious):—disobedience, unbelief.

    Apathia, indifference.

Romans 11:30-32 ( KJV ) 30For as ye in times past have not believed God, yet have now obtained mercy through their unbelief: 31Even so have these also now not believed, that through your mercy they also may obtain mercy. 32For God hath concluded them all in unbelief/G543/apathy, that he might have mercy upon all.

IMHO, This verse points out exactly why the Church is so drastically split up into so many denominations. Remember, we should be all speaking with one mouth. However, the visible reality of the Church indicates otherwise. We don’t because we, with the Holy Spirit, are all under this apathetic mind set. Furthermore, it is due to this apathy that we are able to close our eyes to contradiction contained in our Bibles. On the other hand, had we truly believed, what we had read in scriptures, we would be able to detect these contradictions, and then take measures towards eliminating them. In that we don’t do this, it gives evidence to this, my stated opinion.

    simply “Christian”

  20. Hold on! I made a grave error in this post.
It should have read “We, without the holy Spirit”. Sorry

  21. Bernard,

Thanks for your input and perspective. I agree that apathy is a big issue.

What contradiction are you referring to? I notice you mention contradiction, but just leave it at that.

  22. I have to appoligize again for my carelessness with yesterdays post. I must have been rushed about something. Here also was a mistake. I meant to say “contradictions” plural. Therefore, I don’t know how to answer your reply. If you are interested in any contradiction that I might present, there seems to be enough contradictions in the first two chapters of the bible, as just one small example. If you cannot agree with this statement, you have not paid enough attention to what you were reading at that time.
    simply “Christian”

  23. Bernard,

Perhaps you should just clearly state what you have to say and what’s on your mind, and then I can decide whether or not it’s suitable to remain on the blog. OK?

  24. Gene,

I think and believe the body of Christ is sleeping and you have made some strong points.

There is need to go back to the teachings of JesusChrist and preachers who serve the cooked foods should tell the congregations the truth for the sake that hell is real and heaven is real.

Many are deceiving preachers and that’s why the preaching of the gospel have taken on a new dimension. The work of Christ is no longer done, but for gains IT IS DONE.

  25. Bimbola,

Things are certainly in a sad condition. The saddest thing is that the great majority of believers can’t even see this.

I believe the time is coming soon, when God will raise up true shepherds after His own heart, who will truly lead and guide the flock by example, out of love for God and love for His people, and they will be ordinary people, not seminary-trained “professionals”.

I believe the scriptures clearly point toward this.

  26. did you know that there is a bunch of people in
America that are laying hands on a bull to bring in wealth.. it is so clear how wrong this is.. This week I have to dedicate my time to praying for the church and people who lay hands on bulls.. it’s so far gone from biblical it’s sad.

  27. Getting There,

That sounds like a lotta Bull to me.

  28. Dear Gene:
I suppose what I had in mind was regarding the effectiveness of a disciple. Being “Religious” isn’t just a Christian thing; just as quoting scripture isn’t the same thing as preaching the absolute truth. This boils down to the fact that what is preached by the so-called Christian leaders of today is somewhat different than what the author of a particular passage, found in our Bible, may have had in mind. Therefore, before one can demonstrate the power of the Holy Spirit effectively in them, they must first remove the contradictions that work against the Holy Spirit. This, IMHO, translates to getting back to first century Christianity, along with getting back as close to the Hebrew text of the OT as possible. I am convinced that the Septuagint primacy idea, is the cause, and has done much harm to the Church that the Christ founded. In essence, this would be like saying that a translation is better than the original. In summation, what is preached should be paramount for effective Holy Spirit Christianity.

  29. Bernard,

OK. Flesh this out. Be concrete and specific.

Take as much space as you’d like

  30. Peace of the Lord be with u all. Iwish to repond by saying that I want to be among the endtime preachers, but I don’t know where to start. Thanks and remain bless in the Lord.

  31. Evang. Paschal,

Thanks for coming. It’s good you desire to be an instrument in the Lord’s hands. I suggest you start by seeking His face, giving yourself fully to Him, and waiting upon His leading. It will come.

  33. Good post Gene. I’d love to read more of what you have to say. You are certainly passionate about getting the word out about the Kingdom.
The Bride must surely make herself ready.

    Keep it up.

    Blessings,

  34. By the way, David – how do I get to your site?

  35. Jerald,

Thanks for the encouragement. I appreciate that.

There is quite a bit on this site for you to read. Feel free to do so.

  36. Brother, i clicked on this site because i would love to know more about discipleship.I gave my life to Christ for some years now and i found out that i am not growing as i should but recently i started having this craving to know God more intimately.God used a sister to teach me of discipleship.I am so happy that God is revealing himself more and more to me now.I know that there is a lot of heresy and deceit in the christendom but the truth remain the same,THE CHURCH OF GOD IS MARCHING ON AND THE GATE OF HELL SHALL NOT PREVAIL.If only everybody will be real disciples of our Lord Jesus Christ indeed we will not be decieved at all by anybody because in dicsipleship God himself is the one teaching you.Not only teaching you the truth but LEADS YOU INTO THE TRUTH.No matter what anybody can say we are all accountable to God individually. If we truly abide in the Lord we wont be decieved.Personally that is why i,ve decided to be a disciple of the LORD.
brother i know you have been a dicsiple for a long time now .do you have any material for me.message or recommended christian books or words of exaltation. i will appreciate it so well.
    COME LORD JESUS.
    AKUCHINYERE FROM NIGERIA.

  37. AKUCHINYERE,

I have just come back to the blog after being off for a month.

It is a great blessing to read your comment and the insight you have received from our Lord.

You said you know I have been a disciple for a long time. Maybe you should read my newest post at http://endtimedisciples.wordpress.com/2009/01/13/truth-or-delusion

I recommend that you continue seeking His face and reading, or listening to things that will help you in your walk as a disciple.

I can recommend http://www.theschoolofchrist.org/, Chip Brogden’s site. Although he is a modern-day teacher, and there are very few modern writers I like, he offers much insight.

I also recommend the T. Austin-Sparks site at http://www.austin-sparks.net/. The writing can be a bit difficult since it’s an older, British style, but perhaps I have more of a problem with that than you will.

    Blessings on your journey.
